For the majority of college students the very last thing they think about is health insurance as is shown in some recently published statistics that show that approximately one out of three college students do not have any form of health insurance coverage. Going to college is an expensive undertaking and simply finding the money you need and arranging your college loans is hard enough, but you must also consider including some form of health insurance alongside everything else you will need to have.

Naturally you should start by looking at your parents' health insurance plan if this applies because it is quite possible that it will cover you while you are at university. You do however need to read through the plan details very carefully because some plans will cover you whilst you are attending college and others will not. Two things that you need to look for in particular are conditions concerning location and age.

The majority of health insurance plans will cover children up to the age of 18 or 21 as long as you are at home and a number of plans will also extend this age limit as long as you are in full-time education. However, many plans are limited to cover within a specific geographic area and so, even if you meet the age requirements of the plan, you may find that you will not be covered when you are away from home.

If your parents' plan will not provide you with the cover you want then you will have to find your own student health insurance and will have to find some appropriate providers. Happily, this is not difficult and there are several insurers who provide plans that are specially designed for university students. So, where should you start looking?

Initially you ought to look at your own university because colleges will generally arrange for their students to get cover at a discounted rate. This does not inevitably mean that this is the best plan for your own needs and you should look at the details of the plan to ensure that it does indeed meets your needs. Nevertheless your own college is a very good place to start your search and will often provide you with the best deal. One other thing to consider when looking at your own university is just what type of medical facilities are provided on campus. Many of the larger colleges will have first class medical facilities that are staffed around the clock, while the majority of the smaller colleges will have much more limited facilities.

Away from the university itself you can also look to the many health insurers and several publicly funded organizations for cover. And do not forget that there are a number of different forms of plan that are targeted at different groups of students. For example, short-term health insurance could suit a lot of graduate students and can normally be extended after graduation to cover the period until you secure employment and become eligible for an employer's plan. In addition, there are supplemental plans that will provide cover for you for such things as pre-existing medical conditions that are generally excluded from normal student cover.

Today health insurance is a complicated area and you will have to shop around in order to to get a plan that meets your requirements and also fits your budget. Nevertheless, this is something that you should certainly not forget about because attending college is an expensive enough undertaking in the first place and you do not want to risk your money or your future simply because you are unable to meet the cost of illness or injury.
